14-year old Brooke Henderson wins CN Canadian Women's Tour event

Beloeil, QC (june 13, 2012) – Amateur Brooke Henderson, 14, of Smiths Falls, Ont., a member of Team Canada’s Development Squad, carded a final round 1-over 72 to capture the season’s second CN Canadian Women’s Tour event at Club de golf Beloeil in Beloeil, Que.

Henderson, who entered final round play with a single stroke lead after posting an opening-round 4-under 67 on Tuesday, converted four birdies on the day to close the tournament with a 36-hole tally of 3-under 139, besting LPGA Tour member Lisa Ferrero of Lodi, Calif. by two strokes for the victory.

“It’s amazing. The nerves are still going right now,” said Henderson, who over the weekend earned a berth in the 2012 U.S Girls’ Junior Championship by finishing tied for first at a qualifying event in Penfield, N.Y. “It was great yesterday, some good rounds and competition, so it was a lot of fun.”

With her CN Canadian Women’s Tour win, Henderson earns an exemption into the 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Open which will be held at the Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam, B.C. from August 20-26. She also took home top amateur honors as well.

With the exemption, Henderson – who will compete at the Vancouver Golf Club as a 14-year old this August – appears to be the youngest player ever to participate in Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship according to the records held at the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. The previous youngest player to compete was teen sensation and current LPGA Tour player Lexi Thompson, who played in the 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open when she was 15. The youngest player ever to compete in an LPGA event was Beverly Klass who played the 1967 Dallas Civitan Open as a 10 year old.

“It’s so exciting and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Henderson about the opportunity to compete for Canada’s National Women’s Open title. “Hopefully, I can have some good rounds down there and play well.”

Ferrero finished runner-up with a two-day tally of 1-under 141 and claimed the $10,000 prize as the top professional.

Past CN Canadian Women’s Tour winner Candace Schepperle of Birmingham, Ala. and Team Canada National Squad member Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont. finished tied for third at 1-over 143. Schepperle closed with a round of 3-under 68, while Kirby posted a final-round score of 3-over 74.

Angela Drane of Grandview, P.E.I. rounded out the top-5, finishing at 2-over 144, while LPGA Tour member, Team Canada graduate and past CN Canadian Women’s Tour event winner Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, Ont. tied for sixth, six shots off the lead, at 3-over 145.

Team Canada National Squad member Brittany Marchand of Orangeville, Ont. finished tied for 11th at 5-over 147, while teammate Augusta James of Bath, Ont. tied for 13th spot at 6-over 148.

LPGA Tour member Samantha Richdale of Kelowna, B.C. finished tied for 15th at 7-over 149, while Team Canada National Squad member Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam, B.C., who captured the CN Canadian Women’s Tour season-opener in Richmond, B.C., tied for 17th at 8-over 150.

The season’s final CN Canadian Women’s Tour event is scheduled for June 25-27 at Legends on the Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ont. The event feature a $60,000 (CAD) purse, with $10,000 (CAD) awarded to the winner, along with a champion’s exemption into the 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Open.

Players competing on the Tour also earn points towards the CN Canadian Women’s Tour Order of Merit. The player with the most points at the end of the season earns the Jocelyne Bourassa Player of the Year Award. The top three players on the CN Canadian Women’s Tour season-ending Order of Merit will be awarded direct entry into Stage 2 of LPGA Qualifying School. All entry fees will be paid for Stage 2 and, if applicable, Stage 3 (up to a value of $4,000 each).

In addition, the top two competitors on the season-ending Order of Merit not otherwise exempt also earn entry into the 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Open.
