Meghan McDougall and Brett McKinnon capture CN Future Links Atlantic Championship
Cavendish, P.E.I. (July 19, 2012) – Meghan McDougall of Markham, Ont. and Brett McKinnon of Glace Bay, N.S. captured their respective Junior Girls and Junior Boys division titles at the CN Future Links Atlantic Championship at Eagles Glenn Golf Course in Cavendish, P.E.I. on Thursday.
In the Junior Girls division, McDougall, 18, capped a wire-to-wire victory by carding a final-round 1-under 71 that included four birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey en route to posting an impressive 14-stroke victory over Emily Romkey, 17, of Fall River, N.S.
“I took it all in stride this week, one shot at a time,” said McDougall, who’s headed to the University of Kentucky in the fall. “I focused entirely on myself and my game out there, and I wasn’t worried about how the other competitors were doing.”
McDougall posted a 54-hole tally of 5-over 221, while Romkey claimed second place at 19-over 235.
With the victory, McDougall earned an exemption into the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship, which runs July 31 – August 3 at River Spirit Golf Club in Calgary.
“I’ll be looking to take the same mentality and focus to Calgary,” said McDougall, who finished fourth at the Investors Group Ontario Junior Girls’ Championship earlier this month. “I played ‘free’ golf this week, playing for myself instead of playing for other people, and I’m ecstatic about the opportunity to play in the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship.”
Julia Henderson, 18, of New Glasgow, N.S. and Marie-France Finn, 18, of Memramcook, N.B., finished T3 in the Junior Girls division at 20-over 236, 15 shots off the lead, while Krysta Schaus, 17, of Fredericton, N.B. rounded out the top-5 at 21-over 237, 16 shots back.
In the Junior Boys division, McKinnon, 18, posted three birdies on the day and just two bogeys to card a final-round 1-under 71, and went on to earn a three-stroke victory over Blair Bursey, 15, of Gander, N.L., who posted a score of 1-under 71 to close out the championship.
McKinnon, the 2012 Nova Scotia Junior Boys champion who is headed into his sophomore year at Jacksonville University, finished with a three-day tally of 3-under 213, while Bursey finished at even-par 216.
“I was just trying to take things in this week, with my family here to watch the tournament,” said McKinnon, who collected his fourth career CN Future Links Atlantic Championship title after besting the field in the Junior Boys division in 2010, and earning Bantam Boys division honors in 2006 and 2007. “We don’t have much time together since I’m away at college, so it was great to have my mom, dad and my sister out here to see it.”
Andrew Reid, 18, of Cole Harbour, N.S. and Bradford Curren, 18, of Hammonds Plains, N.S., finished T3 at 1-over 217, while Myles Creighton, 16, of Digby, N.S. and Alex Feltmate, 18, of Fletcher’s Lake, N.S. were T5 at 2-over 218.
With the victory, McKinnon earned an exemption into the 2012 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, which will be contested July 31 – August 3 at Osprey Ridge Golf Club in Bridgewater, N.S., as did the other top five finishers in the Junior Boys division – Bursey, Reid, Curren, Creighton and Feltmate.
“I’m really excited about it,” said McKinnon. “I’ve been there twice now, and I understand what the championship is all about. Playing with some of the best players in college golf, I’ve learned that I just need to play my own game out there.”
