Adam Svensson of BC nabs Canadian Junior title
Bridgewater, N.S. (August 3, 2012) – Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C. carded a final-round competitive course record 7-under par 64 at Osprey Ridge Golf Club in Bridgewater, N.S. on Friday to capture the 2012 Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
Svensson, who started the day T11, five shots off the lead, posted a bogey-free round that featured seven birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 to start the day and on No. 16 and No. 17 to close out the round en route to carding a four-day tally of 1-under par 283.
A member of Team Canada’s Development Squad, Svensson, the 2010 Canadian Juvenile Boys Champion, bested teammate and 2011 Canadian Junior and Canadian Juvenile champion Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows, B.C. and Luke Moser of Waterloo, Ont. by two strokes, as the pair finished T2 at 1-over par 285.
“It feels amazing,” said Svensson, who has also captured the B.C. Amateur Championship, the B.C. Junior Boys Championship and the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship during the course of a standout junior golf career. “I’ve tried to win this tournament for four years now. I’ve been close, but finally it came. The win definitely gives me confidence going forward in my golf career.”
Svensson will compete next week in the 2012 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship which will be conducted August 7th – 10th at Camelot Golf and Country Club in Cumberland, Ont. and Club de golf Outaouais in Rockland, Ont.
Mark Valliere of Courtenay, B.C. finished fourth at 2-over par 286, while Matthew Scobie of Ajax, Ont. rounded out the top-5 at 3-over par 287.
Vancouver’s Trevor Yu also carded a competitive course record 7-under par 64 on Friday, and went on to capture the 2012 Canadian Juvenile Boys Championship in a two-hole playoff over Patrick Murphy of Crossfield, Alta.
Yu and Murphy both finished with a 72-hole tally of 5-over par 289 before Yu bested Murphy on the second playoff hole, No. 1, to claim the title.
“I was feeling confident with all the long clubs today. I was throwing darts out there,” said Yu. “I was fortunate enough to make a couple of putts. My driver went really well and I hit almost every fairway when I took it out of the bag. It was sweet to get the 64 and the competitive course record, and I had fun.”
Calgary’s Matt Williams finished third in the Juvenile Boys division at 6-over par 290, while Kevin Vigna of Coquitlam, B.C. was fourth at 8-over par 292. Conner Watt of Mississauga, Ont. and Chad Watts Denyes of Toronto finished T5 at 9-over par 293.
