Muskoka Bay Club Receives Two Awards as Best New Course

Two of Ontario’s top golf magazines have selected Muskoka Bay Club as “Best New Course for 2006.” Both Ontario Golf and Fairways golf magazines, which started distribution of their fall publications to courses over the Thanksgiving weekend, chose Muskoka Bay as No. 1 in extremely tight races.
“It is very exciting that both Ontario Golf and Fairways magazines have selected Muskoka Bay as the Best New Course in Ontario, especially when you consider the other excellent golf courses that were in the running,” architect Doug Carrick said. “I think it is a testament to the vision and commitment to excellence that owner Peter Freed and Larry Ungerman, his development partner, had for the project from day one. The outstanding conditioning provided by Superintendent Chris Goodman and his staff along with the excellent service provided by General Manager Jeff Boismier and his staff all have contributed tremendously to the success of Muskoka Bay. I am very honoured to have been involved in such a great project and my thanks go to Peter Freed for the opportunity to freely express our ideas.”

Ontario Golf magazine editor Ted McIntyre said, “What stands out for me is the memorability of virtually every hole on the course. There's distinction and individuality at every turn, all woven together seamlessly through a sensational piece of Muskoka. I can't wait for the completion of the clubhouse; perched atop the highest point of the property, for there may not be a better venue in Ontario from which to enjoy a post-round libation. Other panellists raved - “It is the new absolute must-play in Ontario golf,” said Garry McKay, the golf writer at the Hamilton Spectator. Craig Loughry, Director of Handicapping & Course Rating for the Golf Association of Ontario said, “You can't pick a signature hole at this course because they have eighteen of them. You will not believe what you see at this course. It will be interesting to see how fast this will be accepted as one of the top courses in the province and our country.”

In the Ontario Golf rankings, Muskoka Bay Club, which opened on July 1, 2006, finished ahead of courses designed by many of the biggest names in the business including American architects Tom Fazio with Coppinwood GC, Rees Jones at Grand Niagara Resort and Hurdzan-Fry Architects at The Club at Bond Head, joint efforts by Tom Lehman and Canadian architect Tom McBroom with The Raven Golf Club at Lora Bay and John Daly and Bo Danoff at Thundering Waters GC, as well as OslerBrook G&CC designed by Canadian Graham Cooke.

At Fairways Magazine there was a tie for first between Muskoka Bay Club and Coppinwood, a private course designed by Fazio near Uxbridge. Both courses received identical numbers of votes from the Fairways Best New Course panel. In the closest vote in the six year history of the Best New Course Award, both received four first place votes, three second place votes and one third place vote each.

“Some people may be disappointed with a tie vote,” commented Fairways Editor Peter Mumford, “but I think it’s a tribute to two great courses and two very talented designers that our panel felt both were deserving of the top award. Quite frankly we’ve never had a tie vote before and don’t have a procedure for breaking one. Personally, I’m not at all unhappy with a tie as both courses are spectacular in very different ways and deserved to be so honoured.”

Muskoka Bay Club’s General Manager Jeff Boismier summed it up this way, “It has been an amazing first few months at Muskoka Bay. The response we have had from the golfers coming off the course has been overwhelming. People have been astounded by the views, challenge and the playability. We’re really looking forward to opening in 2007 for our first full season at Muskoka Bay Club.”

Carrick noted that Muskoka Bay will be entered into the competition for Golf Digest's Best New Course in Canada in 2007.
